“Painters of light” is a description that has been thrown about the art world with abandon since the first art historian noticed a cave painting that depicted the sunlight’s effect on an elk’s head.  Since then, artists from Dutch Masters to The Minimalists have been striving to “capture light”.  Arguably the purist form of the pursuit came from the original “Light and Space” movement spearheaded in Southern California in the 1960’s by artists like John McLaughlin, Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, Craig Kauffman and Marcia Roberts, James Turrell, and DeWain Valentine .

The recent Pacific Standard Time effort of the Getty Museum brought much needed credibility to the art of Southern California internationally and now no serious contemporary American collection is complete without representation from the movement.

Over the years as their efforts became more defined, the artists purified their visions and honed their craft. The culmination of their efforts is well represented by this generation spanning group in this upcoming show.

“Luminous” is an exhibition opening at Melissa Morgan Fine Art, March 9th, 2013. Shimmering pearlescent pigments to geometric patterns on painterly surfaces, ever shifting colors to light sensitive phosphorescents all will be represented in this show featuring: Andy Moses, Lita Albuquerque, Marcia Roberts, Ned Evans, and Norman Zammit.  A clear focus and identity through evolution can be seen in each of the artists works ushering in the new generation.
