Wine, Rock n’ Roll and Tiki bar – are three words that normally do not go together. But on Friday, February 22, all three will be celebrated at Riviera Palm Springs as part of a series of different wine tastings and the unveiling of the hotel’s newest desert gem.
‘The vibe is a Rockabilly tasting party rather than a typical wine pairing,“ said Marketing and Promotions coordinator, Patricia Palmer.
Part of the Rock n’ Roll vibe comes from the wine maker himself, Charles Smith. With black and white labels with edgy graphics and unique names such as Velvet Devil Merlot and Kung Fu Girl, Smith’s wines are memorable like a catchy rock tune.
Smith, Food & Wine Magazine’s 2009 Winemaker of the Year, is a self-taught wine maker who first realized his love for wine while traveling through Europe as a manager for rock bands and concert tours.
The wines that will be featured at Friday’s event are Kung Fu Girl, a Riesling wine with hints of Apricot, Kumquat, Nectarine and lime leaves; The Velvet Devil Merlot, with aromas of dark cherries, cedar, pipe tobacco, Anise, and stone and cherry blossoms; Secco Moscato, which features white peach, Jasmine and lychee; Eve Chardonnay, which has guava, Bosc pear, Satsuma, spice and minerals; and Secco Rose, which features hints of vibrant rose, alpine strawberry, black raspberry, Italian dark cherries and crushed stone.
To pair with the unique wines, Riviera Palm Springs Executive Chef Jesse Souza has created an Americana comfort food-style menu, Palmer said. The menu will feature duck carnitas sliders, hush puppies with maple sour cream, low and slow beef short ribs, mini meringue pies and griddled fluffernutters.
The Rock n’ Roll entertainment for the night will be provided by Wyatt Lowe and the Youngbloods, a rock blues band from San Diego, who are coming straight off the road from The International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Friday night’s appearance will be the fourth time the young, but talented group, will perform at Riviera Palm Springs, Palmer said.
What also makes February 22nd at Riviera Palm Springs a night to remember is that there will also be an Grand Opening of their newest “desert oasis,” The Chiki Bar. The Chiki Bar is a Tiki bar and pool which features lush landscaping, progressive art and reggae beats.
“The Chiki Bar and Pool was conceived from the 1960s Tiki Chic Island trend,” Palmer said. “It’s an island outpost here in the desert.”
According to Palmer, the Chiki Bar will serve island-influenced dishes such as Chiki fish tacos and jerk chicken sandwiches and fun drinks such as Mike’s Tai, Barbados Swizzle and Passion Mint Clementine.
“Friday will be an eclectic night filled with great music, fabulous foods and phenomenal wines,” Palmer said.
Poolside, at Riviera Palm Springs, is where wine, Rock n’ Roll and Tiki Bars can collaborate to make for one memorable, fun and “rockin’” night.
