May Special
Intimate and romantic, Pomme Frite provides the ideal ambiance for your specialty dinner — or any time you crave a taste of Europe. The quaint setting evokes an European cafe atmosphere. French music softly plays in the background, creating a mood enhanced regularly by a live accordion player.
The greatest praise, Owner-Entrepreneur Jean-Claude Constant reveals, is when patrons profess that they feel like they’re in Paris or Brussels, instead of a cozy bistro in Palm Springs. Constant says, “Because of the atmosphere, because of the music, the accordion player, the beer, the food, people feel they are transported to Europe for an evening. That’s the best compliment I can get. And I get it frequently.” Pomme Frite opened downtown Palm Springs in 1999 as a small bistro. In recent years, Constant saw the opportunity to expand his dining patio, a favorite spot for diners to share the excitement of sidewalk and street side traffic along the legendary Palm Canyon Drive.
The oven-baked French Onion Soup with “Beaucoup” Gruyere cheese is a great starter among the appetizers, like the oven-baked imported Escargots, the baked Brie, and the roasted Beets and Goat Cheese Napoleon.
Steak lovers may choose from several different cuts of beef for their steak-frites like the Hanger Steak, Baseball Prime Sirloin, New York, Filet Mignon Medallions or Ribeye with their choice of brandy-green peppercorn sauce, bordelaise, or blue cheese cream. The signature dish, Flemish-Style Carbonnade of Beef, long simmered in Belgium beer and served with Pommes Frites, remains the favorite of the food aficionados. “Belgium is north of France,” Constant explains. “They have the sun; we have the shade. They have the wine, we have the beer.” Those seeking the catch of the day may opt for seabass, mahi mahi, salmon, rainbow trout, fillets of sole, or Mixed Grill of Tiger Shrimp and Sea Scallops, or the California Bouillabaisse but the specialty of the house remains the Steamed Mediterranean Black Mussels prepared seven different ways.
Regular customers choose the same nights to come for their favorite dishes. Every day of the week features a different house specialty, such as Friday's Veal Osso-Buco and Saturday’s Rack of Lamb. Pomme Frite is open six nights a week from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m., closed Tuesdays. From October until May, open for lunch 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visit the Pomme Frite web site for the full menu, wine list, Belgian beer list and special promotions.
