Icing On The Cake

How do I love thee? Let me count the layers...

From cupcakes (brides love them and so do their guests) to colossal cakes of dizzying heights, trends show that couples wed in the desert are open to a range of styles from small to tall.

Brides who want to keep it simple — and will forego the conventional cake cutting — have been known to scour grocery stores (like Bristol Farms in Palm Desert) and delis (like Sherman’s Deli & Bakery in Palm Springs and Palm Desert) for cupcakes they can scatter across a table or stack themselves on a multitier display.

However, most still envision a custom cake from a wedding pro that incorporates the colors or other elements from their event. This year, we saw fresh flowers replacing traditional cake toppers at nearly every turn. (Your floral designer can work with your cake designer to create a cake-ready arrangement that complements your other wedding-day flowers.)

Of-the-moment cakes often combine elegant layers with bright florals (fresh or frosting — take your pick) for a timeless and natural look. Topping your tiers with the same blooms as in your bouquet and centerpieces makes for one less decision to make — and more time to sample from local bakers to find your perfectly delicious match.
