La Quinta’s Plaza at Point Happy has gotten a little sunnier since The Broken Yolk Café opened up in March.
The newest of 13 franchise operations throughout Southern California, this casual breakfast and lunch eatery completely transforms a large restaurant space that has been everything from a steak-and-martini house to an Asian buffet.
Owners Jennifer and Oscar Babb also own and operate a Broken Yolk Café in Temecula, dividing their time between the two.
“I’ve gotten used to the drive by now,” says Jennifer, who spent time in the desert as a child. “We stay at our condo here overnight, and go back home to Temecula.”
The couple invested in renovating the space with a warm color palette and floor to ceiling glass tile back splash. The central dining area has café and counter seating, separated from a perimeter of more intimate booths by low wood-topped dividers, and from here is access to a large covered pet-friendly patio that overlooks Highway 111.
“We enclosed part of the former patio and got rid of a big circular bar out there,” says Oscar.
A large private dining area with fireplace has a 150-seat capacity for special events and business meetings, equipped with Wi-Fi. Throughout the restaurant are several flat screen TVs.
Started in San Diego in 1979, The Broken Yolk serves home-style, made-from-scratch dishes starting with “just eggs” any style to elaborate concoctions like the Sun-Up Breakfast sandwich with Applewood smoked bacon, American cheese on toasted bread with a pair of fried eggs on top and a side of freshly shredded hash brown potatoes.
Create your own omelets or choose from a dozen “Omelet Obsessions” like the Cisco Kid with Ortega chilies and jack cheese topped with guacamole and sour cream.
Broken Yolk’s own Iron Man or Woman challenge is to consume a 12-egg omelet filled with mushrooms, onions, American cheese and smothered with chili and a big pile of home fries and two biscuits within an hour. Winners go down in history on TBY’s Wall of Fame plus a T-Shirt, and the meal is free. Otherwise, ante up $26.99.
French toast, pancakes, waffles and benedicts round out the breakfast menu. Lunch covers the gamut from South of the border items such as the Fiesta burrito and Tijuana street tacos, plus half-pound angus burgers like Old Reliable with cheese, tomato and lettuce; fresh daily soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps.
As dishes are made-to-order, Broken Yolk can accommodate special requests like gluten-free, low carbohydrate, high protein or other dietary needs.
Open 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., here is one restaurant you can rely on even during holidays when others might be closed.
