A river runs through Rancho Mirage — well, a mini one of sorts at The River shopping center off Highway 111. So perhaps it isn’t surprising that, nearby, the new community of Makena is conjuring up an island beach resort.

“Makena is Hawaiian for ‘place of abundance,'” says broker Dave Kibbey of Dave Kibbey and Associates/HOM Sotheby’s, who is handling the marketing and sales of the homes. “This community was designed to emulate the meaning, but also the essence of Makena Beach in Maui. Makena Beach is a treasured haven and was chosen as inspiration to bring an oasis retreat to the city of Rancho Mirage.”

The front elevation for Lot 3 shows the large span, covered patios that surround the pool areas of the houses designed so far.

The gated community will have only 10 custom homes that will range in size from 4,800 to 5,200 square feet. There are currently two houses under construction on Lots 3 and 9 — with an estimated completion date of November — and another being designed for Lot 6.

All three are the work of local architect James McEachern, who started out in Seattle and moved to Palm Springs in 2002 to start his own firm. McEachern is known for designing custom homes in the 3,000 to 6,000 square foot range.

The residence for Lot 9 sits on a 25,264-square-foot site.

For the homes currently under construction at Makena, “Modern organic design, large open spans with high ceilings, walls of glass, and unusual and unique finishes [are] sure to ignite any savvy buyer’s senses,” says Kibbey.

The four bedroom, 4.5 bathroom houses will feature open great rooms with floating, floor-to-ceiling fireplaces, Fleetwood glass with a motorized glass wall in the living rooms, limestone floors, high-quality appliances, a Vantage Smart Home system, and triple garages.

Outdoor highlights include large span, covered patios, an outdoor kitchen and fireplace, plus a large black-bottom pool and spa which Kibbey notes will, “accentuate the dramatic Hawaiian feel in Rancho Mirage.”

Lot 3, which is 22,215 square feet is priced at $2.89 million; Lot 9, at 25,264 square feet is $2.79 million; Lot 6 is 30,056 square feet, pricing to be determined.
