"Soaring higher than the Santa Rosa Mountains with roots, as deep as the Smoke Tree, is it possible to have the best of both worlds.?" The Logan’s believe so. Venturing from Woodbury, Tenn. to the desert in 1939, Woodrow “Woody” Logan began freelance landscape maintenance. Soon after, he brought in his family, employing his father and brother, Marvin, giving birth to “Logan Sons.” They opened a lawnmower shop on East Palm Canyon Drive and provided landscaping throughout the valley. Logan Sons was responsible for maintaining exclusive foliage for A-listers such as Colonel Tom Parker, Red Skelton, and Doris Day. Woody, now 91, reminisces about finding a house for Elvis Presley in Little Tuscany and the idol’s simple taste in landscape. In the 1970’s, Marvin Sr. took over and renamed it Marvin Logan Landscape. He and his sons, Mark and Marvin Jr. beautified Sheraton Hotel, The Springs Country Club, Indian Wells Country Club, and many other properties. This business’ contribution to the desert is vast. Named Mark Logan Landscape in 1983 it continues to thrive. Although Mark is a desert native, his vision of the desert is as vivid as that of a wide-eyed tourist arriving at Palm Springs International Airport for the first time. His eye for the desert’s beauty not only turns a client’s vision into reality, but often results in a multiple award-winning project. Mark and, his wife, Julie, are pleased to uphold the family’s values and honored to run this historical business. It’s been 70 years and the Logans haven’t lost sight of their small-town business ethic. Vice President Bobby Amis has worked alongside Mark for 18 years. “It’s having dedicated employees like that which allows us to prosper,” Mark explains. Looking at Andalusia, The Traditions, and Rancho La Quinta, it’s easy to see the company’s imprint on the valley, and it doesn’t stop there. The Logan children are taking the reigns. Amanda, a graduate of The University of San Diego, has added a fourth generation to the business. With terms like Beaucarnea recurvata in her vocabulary since she could talk, she’s adding her personal touches to Mark Logan Landscape. Nick is studying environmental horticulture and soil science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is eager to get his hands in the desert soil. Even Makaela has desert sand in her blood. At a mere 14, she’s in the office during school breaks learning the Logan way. “My dad and Uncle Woody taught me the trade and business ethics: doing the project right and making the customer happy. My children are learning the business that same way,” Mark firmly states. The family is keeping tradition as a fourth generation begins to expand the company’s horizons. With superior work ethic and a handshake as his word, Mark Logan Landscape makes a statement: the statement that any project they take is done right.
