Intelligencer - Let There Be Light

The spectacle of prismatic beams draws your attention like A MAGNET. Hiro Yamagata’s monolithic outdoor boxes at Highway 111 and Portola Avenue in Palm Desert were erected by Buschlen Mowatt Galleries, which also is showing an indoor laser light exhibition by the Japanese-born artist through May. “The reflection of the laser beams bouncing off the cubes creates the illusion of a nonmaterial structure between the cubes,” Yamagata has said. “In this way, we see the lights we have never seen before, and the visual effects appear miraculously physical to us.”
The installation builds on Yamagata’s luminous Quantum Induction at Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain — an environmental light show that explores the use of lighting equipment.

Buschlen Mowatt Galleries, 45-188 Portola Ave., Palm Desert; 837-9668
