Visit Ironwood Country Club, located high above the desert floor tucked against the Santa Rosa Mountains and be prepared for a surprise. Sweeping vistas, an array of first-class club amenities, a premier golf experience, and friendly members are the essence of Ironwood. Founded 35 years ago, Ironwood shines brightly today as a top private country club thanks to a recent $24 million reconstruction program. The proceeds from a land sale several years ago provided the capital for new facilities.

Ironwood, a member equity-owned club offers two magnificent 18-hole golf courses. The South Course (Par 72) is rated sixth of “Top 10 in the Valley.”

Brand new, first-class amenities and structures include the Tuscan-style clubhouse and “Spikes” Turnaround/Half-Way Café. The club’s sport center houses a new 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center with aerobics room offering a diverse menu of classes, on-staff personal trainers, and massage services in a spa-like setting.

Ironwood’s prime South Palm Desert location set, against the natural beauty of the Santa Rosas, on 800 acres provides members and homeowners natural serenity and total privacy, yet is only two miles from El Paseo’s fine dining, shopping, and entertainment. Everything someone wants for premier lifestyle living, Ironwood offers. A full calendar of activities and events have, members comparing Ironwood’s social offerings to that of a fine cruise ship. Residency is not a requirement for club membership, though 65 to 70 percent of Ironwood homeowners are members. Homes at Ironwood are a diverse mix of distinctive architecture, from expansive planned unit development to custom estate homes.

Ironwood’s history is directly linked with Palm Desert’s emergence as one of the country’s top resort destinations. Arnold Palmer was instrumental in Ironwood’s beginnings. Ironwood’s two courses were originally designed by Desmond Muirhead and Ted Robinson in consultation with Palmer. A recent $5 million investment in both courses, with several holes redesigned by John Fought and updated practice facilities for short games and bunker shots, make Ironwood’s total golf experience even better than before.

Talk about outstanding golf courses. Players on Ironwood’s challenging South Course have unobstructed, views thanks to no residences on the course. It provides a true championship test offering four sets of tees play from 5,608 to 7,256 yards. Annually the South Course plays host to a U.S. Open qualifying round, but is available to members every day. Vistas include water features, lakes, and the beauty of Ironwood’s natural environment.

The North Course offers playability from 5,245 to 6,065 yards set in one of the country’s most unusual desert and mountain settings. Ironwood boasts four PGA pros in season and three off season. Future development will not mar the beauty of Ironwood’s two courses. Adjacent land is protected through Bureau of Land Management and UCR ownership. The result is an unbeatable golf experience played on two pristine courses.

Ironwood’s rebirth clearly positions it among the desert’s top clubs. The new two-story, 50,000-square-foot clubhouse is the centerpiece for life at Ironwood. Its grand stone entrance projects a sense of arrival. Members enjoy expansive outdoor patio dining overlooking the South Course. A grand ballroom and two dining rooms add to Ironwood’s abundant social opportunities. The clubhouse’s upper-level private dining room for 50 sports a terrace with spectacular down-valley views. Also on the second level are the Ladies locker rooms. Adjacent lounges for each set the scene for informal gatherings, including card games and club meetings like Ironwood’s noted artists group.

Tennis is an active part of the Ironwood lifestyle with 14 courts, including a stadium style-court, all located at the sport center. Ironwood’s affluent membership comes from all parts of the country. They choose Ironwood Country Club because of its friendly club environment.

Throughout its 35 years of excellence, Ironwood has remained a well-kept secret. Now with its rebirth, word is out among desert insiders how truly special Ironwood Country Club is.
