A lawn chair became the latest addition to Palm Springs’ public art collection in November. But this is no ordinary lawn chair. This Lawn Chair — standing 5 feet high and measuring 7.5 feet long by 3.5 feet wide — is upholstered with artificial grass by Venice artist Blue McRight. The piece sits at the corner of  Palm Canyon Drive and Granvia Valmonte.

The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission believed that the work complements the city’s aura as a place to relax and soak in the sun. Informed by nature and culture, it addresses the “design sophistication of Southern California and the outdoor lifestyle,” McRight says.

The city recently installed two other sculptures: Whirlwind VI by Gary Slater of Tempe, Ariz., and Wave Rhythms by John Mishler of Goshen, Ind. The former, at Ruth Hardy Park, is a series of stainless steel blades on a powder-coated pedestal. The latter — in Sunrise Park at Ramon Road and Sunrise Way — is a 15-foot, stainless steel, kinetic sculpture suggestive of Palm Springs’ ubiquitous palms.
