It seems counterintuitive to use the word “ugly” on your calling card when you’re a makeup artist, but Judy Twine can be proud of her 12-show makeup job for Ugly Betty, one of this TV season’s hits. In fact, the ABC show purchased Twine’s entire Take 5 Cosmetics line for the cast.
Now a La Quinta resident, Twine grew up in San Francisco and became a model at age 15. She was on her way to a successful modeling career, but found herself more intrigued with the makeup artists and their methods than gossiping with her peers.
After completing cosmetology school, she set her sights on Hollywood. It was a case of being at the right place at the right time when she heard a casting agent frantically looking for a replacement for a makeup artist unable to make a music video shoot for the group TLC. She immediately landed a second video gig — this time for Patti LaBelle, who Twine says “stopped production to comment on the makeup.”
One of Take 5 Cosmetic’s customers is Aretha Franklin, whom Twine first made up for an NAACP event, then an awards show and concerts. “It was like working with a family member,” Twine says. She has worked on numerous TV and film productions, including Grammy and American Music awards shows, and was nominated for an Emmy for makeup in the Showtime movie Zoo Man. Look for her work also in the film Freedom Writers starring Hilary Swank (being released Jan. 12).
Twine says her cosmetics are “for people who don’t like to wear a lot of makeup and for sensitive skin.” They’re sold by Tiffany Ryan Salon and the spa at The Hideaway, both in La Quinta, and Kim Secre at Creative Hair in Palm Desert.
