The big draw at the Palm Springs International Film Festival may be movies, but the behind-the-scenes palm-pressing and deal-making are what make this festival tick. From the opening-night bash Jan. 4 at Palm Springs Art Museum to the finale Jan. 15 at Spa Resort Casino, industry icons make deals and careers over hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.
Sonny Bono, who founded the festival in 1990, will have his star rededicated Jan. 5 after a private luncheon. Likewise, the House & Garden party at the former Sinatra home in Twin Palms is invite-only.
The next night, the red carpet rolls out at Palm Springs Convention Center for the opening hosted by Mary Hart. Honorees include Todd Field, Jessica Biel, Adam Beach, Sydney Pollack, and Philip Glass. Tiffany & Co. will host a private after-party at Parker Palm Springs, where many of the celebs stay.
Next is a SAG Foundation Sunday brunch and tea party at the Parker (also private). You can, however, buy tickets for the Gay-la reception on Jan. 11 at Toucans Tiki Lounge.
Private cocktails at Hotel Zoso and an after-party at Boscoso before screening an Italian film also are scheduled for Jan. 7. International consulates will host receptions honoring films from France, Canada, Israel, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Switzerland. The French hold an event on Jan. 12, at Spencer’s (open to the public who buy tickets). The Canadians’ gala party that same night at the Palm Springs Art Museum is invite-only.
Jim and Jackie Lee Houston will hold a private closing-night gala Jan. 13. Sunday brunch on the 14th is for jury winners only, sorry.
If you’re in the mood to hobnob, buy tickets to the International Reception Jan. 13 or the closing-night party at Spa Resort Casino.
