SPECIAL ADVERTORIAL FEATURE For Festivals and So Much More It is the oldest and largest city in the Coachella Valley with a rich history. In 1930, Indio incorporated as a city. It had a population of 1,875. Today, thanks to phenomenal growth in new home construction, more than 75,000 call Indio “home.” Over the years, Indio has achieved international recognition for its multicultural festivals, which attract many thousands of visitors to the area annually. The festivals are diverse in their celebrations of such things as art, cuisine, and music. The Indio International Tamale Festival is ranked by the Food Network-TV as among the top 10 “All American Food Festivals” in the nation. The Riverside County National Date Festival is famous for its more than 7,000 exhibits, Arabian Nights Pageants; and, of course, the popular camel and ostrich races. One of the most popular festivals is the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, which last year drew 180,000 young music lovers to the Empire Polo Club for three rollicking days of performances by some of the hottest bands from around the world. For country music lovers, the Stagecoach Country Music Festival brings the nation’s most beloved country music performers to the Empire Polo Club, attracting 50,000 guests in its 2007 debut. Families especially enjoy Indio Fiesta Days, which sizzle in Old Town with two days of hot salsa — food, music, and dancing. For art lovers there is the Southwest Arts Festival®, one of the largest and most significant art festivals in the U.S., a three-day display by over 240 judged and juried artists. For dog lovers, there is the Palm Springs AKC Kennel Club Dog Show, among the largest in the country. In addition to year round festivals, Indio’s rich heritage can be seen in bold, colorful murals that brighten many buildings around Old Town and Indio Boulevard. These historic murals tell stories of the railroad, agriculture, and the area’s first Native American inhabitants, whose heritage is also celebrated throughout the season at colorful powwows. The murals give us a glimpse of California’s past. The City of Indio is an exciting community carefully charting its course for today and generations to follow. Mark Your Calendars!
