SPECIAL ADVERTORIAL FEATURE Featuring New Realism and Abstraction By Alish Farzaneh The desert art scene, which is becoming ever more in tune with the contemporary art world, is reflected in Modern Masters Fine Art’s shift toward emerging and midcareer artists. The 5,000- square-foot gallery will feature revolving, thematic shows in addition to permanent installations of important Modern works by Claes Oldenberg, Arman, Picasso, and Matisse, as well as works in glass and sculpture. Robert Dunahay, Daniel Matlzman, Daniel Arsenault, and Trek Kelly open the season with an assault on the visual senses. This is Pop for a new generation — seamlessly integrating everyday objects, icons, and wit with a social consciousness in the way only the post-punk era can and without compromising composition, sensitivity, and technique. A group photography exhibition featuring David Blank, Sherri Breyer, Patrick Frasier, Peter Gurnz and Tom Johnson follows in December. In January, artist Andy Moses and gallery owner Melissa Morgan-Nauert will co-curate a show of Southern California stars, including CalArts alumni Moses and Jimi Gleason with Alex Couwenberg and Michel Tabori. They will introduce a compelling palette of new abstraction. Using surface and material sensibilities of the Finish Fetish, each artist brings his or her own vision to this installation. Moses’ serene convex and concave canvases are mesmerizing — the compositions rendered in pearlescent pigments. Gleason’s work is equally engaging, with a closer nod to the color field painters of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Couwenberg defies the stereotype of midcentury modernism themes and, without irony, brings them into the 21st century. Filmmaker/artist Michel Tabori’s work, marked by its rich depth of surface, pulls the viewer into joyful yet ethereal imagery. This gallerywide installation will be accompanied by multimedia presentations. Dan Griggs is a talented draftsman equally influenced by modernist geometric abstraction and the eccentric drama of the photographic snapshot. He is also a symbolist who tells strange Gothic tales. And Michael Sokolis paints a series of images of twilight-lit residential street corners, unnerving only when one realizes a series of everyday people are crossing electric wires like a tightrope. The ability to take a centuries-old style — perfected in academic ways by the Dutch in the 17th century — and to infuse modern psychology and symbolism bridges 400 years of art history into smart contemporary realism. In April 2008, the gallery will introduce three female artists: Dixie Friend Gay, the 2003 Texas State Artist of the Year; sculptor J.D. Hansen; and Elaine Pizza. MMFA also represents painters Braldt Bralds, Whitey Flagg, Michael Freed, Dan Griggs, Marietta Leis, Michael Page, Paul Pitsker, Gabriel Rivera, Jim Rogers, Michael Shemchuck, Doug Smith, and Sri Whipple; and sculptors Will Clift, Tim Doyle, Richard Erdman, J.P. Long, Joe McDonnell, and Susan Trees, among others. A monthly preview of MMFA gallery shows is held the first Tuesday of every month at The Viceroy Hotel in Palm Springs.
