"A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous,” Coco Chanel once said. More 1930s café society than overthe- top costuming, the Chanel Resort 2010 collection, unveiled at Saks Fifth Avenue in The Gardens on El Paseo in Palm Desert, has the distinct flavor of Venice’s Lido Beach, one of Coco’s favorite playgrounds.

The collection emphasizes simplicity and comfort — but not at the expense of elegant style. Gondolier-inspired stripes on creamy cashmeres, white linen pleated trousers paired with the perfect navy short jacket, playful beachwear, and delicate glass beading that appears to be the handiwork of a Venetian glass blower punctuate the resort collection, as references to the Lido flow into every piece.

The white dress and jacket trimmed with gold braid are pure Chanel elegance. The blue-and-whitestriped hatbox/cosmetic travel case tops several outstanding accessories.

And the sunglasses are styled as Venetian masquerade lorgnettes.

From swimsuits to cocktail dresses, designer Karl Lagerfeld modernizes the Chanel look with reverence for its roots and an appreciation for the serious and playful dimensions of today’s woman.
