Summer Fun at Any Age

How the generations play, relax, and blow off steam

Ebony March Arts & Entertainment

A few years ago, MTV president Van Toffler made headlines by announcing that his network would no longer cater to the cynical members of Generation X. Instead, MTV shifted its focus and programming toward the kinder, gentler Millennial generation. Toffler touched on an interesting concept: What makes the generations tick, particularly here in the Coachella Valley? We have a few suggestions:

Baby Boomers
(born approximately between 1945-1964)

The first idealists of the world, this generation took the lessons and work ethic bestowed upon it by its parents and added to it a layer of rebellion and social activism. Many baby boomers started families early, by today’s standards. They worked hard, and some have begun to settle into retirement.

Fill your summer with fun and adventure. Take in a twilight golf session at The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa, 71333 Dinah Shore Dr., Rancho Mirage. 760-328-5955. You’ll love the fun of friendly competition and staying fit. Or relive your hippie years or the self-actualization of the ’70s with a timeshare at the clothing-optional Desert Sun Resort, 1533 N. Chaparral Rd., Palm Springs. 800-960-4786.  www.desertsunresort.com

Generation X
(born approximately between 1965-1981)

They were called “slackers,” not because they were lazy, but due to the disenfranchisement of being reared post-revolution. The era of the hippie had died. The Civil Rights Movement had migrated to the pages of their history books. They had nothing left to fight for, so instead, they fell in love with music and pop culture. They also developed a love of burgeoning technologies like the Internet and 16-bit video games.

Generation X, explore the photography of Roger Ballen at Palm Springs Museum through July 28. This exhibition marries found objects, drawings, and broken furniture for an edgy look at pop culture. Or, pick up your sabre and epee and head to Desert Fencing Academy, My Gym, 73760 Dinah Shore Dr., Palm Desert. 760-346-6307. You’ll love mastering a new skill that eludes everyone around you. www.psmuseum.org

Millennials
(born approximately between 1982-1996)

This generation was born alongside the advent of MTV. Their attention spans may be shorter, but their love of hearth and home is great. They’re open, friendly, and enthusiastic. Millennials, immerse yourselves in art and culture at Palm Springs International ShortFest, Camelot Theatres, 2300 E. Baristo Rd., Palm Springs. See the coolest short films made by directors who share your love of YouTube. Check it out with your family. www.camelottheatres.com

Generation Z
(born approximately between 1997-present)

Today’s youth market is technologically savvy, and, boy, do they know it. These kids interact with each other via social media, personal digital devices, and other platforms, but you’d be hard-pressed to find them actively seeking outdoor fun. Parents of Generation Z, introduce your kids to the fun you used to have. Boomers! Palm Springs, 67700 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Cathedral City is a great place to let your child ride go karts, try mini golf, or even experience rock-wall climbing and rappelling. www.boomersparks.com
