ART
Meet the Artist

Palm Springs transplant Robert Dunahay (pictured below, right) is known for his palm tree paintings and how they just about jump out at you i along a 3-D nature. The Cathedral City Public Art Commission is hosting a reception from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 10 at city hall.

Free Second Sundays
Just like it says, all activities and admission is free at the Palm Springs Art Museum starting at 11 a.m. Oct. 13. Families can practice contour drawing, watch and talk to artist Diane McClary as she paints landscapes and finally listen to a lecture Amy Scott talk about how the 1830s were a pivotal time for frontier history and American art.

Variety is the Spice of Life
Running into January, this art at the La Quinta Museum show offers the work of 31 Coachella Valley artists from such disciplines as painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, paper macho, jewelry, collage, fused glass, ceramic art, mixed media, and metalwork. Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday. Watch a video of artist Kathy Dunham explain her artwork.

MUSIC
8th Annual Joshua Tree Music Festival

Former Twentynine Palms resident Karl Denson and his Tiny Universe headlines the two-day concert, Oct. 11-13, at the Joshua Tree Campground. Read our preview and see who else is featured.

FILM
Documentary Award Winner

"Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago", which captured the Audience Favorite Award at the American Documentary Film Festival back in April in Palm Spring,s is back along with a documentary short, "Digital Blackout/Sleeping with Siri" starting at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Camelot Theatre.

Vive la France
Raphael and Charlotte Farsy moved from Paris and opened L'Atelier Deli in downtown Palm Springs back in April, and now they are mixing food with filmmaking in hosting fellow French countryman and Palm Springs resident D'Geyrald DG from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the deli. D'Geyrald DG is traveling the country filming responses to the question, "What makes you happy to be in America?" Read our preview.

You Say You Got a Revolution
Leland Orser, who you'll recognize from the TV shows ER, 24 and Revolution, is the director of Morning, which shows at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Cinémas Palme D'or in Palm Desert. Orser's real-life wife, Emmy nominee Jeanne Tripplehorn (Grey Gardens) stars in the movie.

HALLOWEEN
Just say Boo!

Take a carriage tour down the spooky streets of Palm Springs with a headless horseman. Tours run Oct. 11-13 from 8-11 p.m.

"What Are You Gonna Be"
PartyLab hopes to help you answer that question with a party at 7 p.m. Oct. 12. Costume consultants will be on hand.

THEATER
"Sound of Music"

Featuring a list of songs you can surely sing to, this ageless musical continues its run at the Palm Canyon Theatre with performances at 7 p.m. Oct. 10, 8 p.m. Oct. 11-12, and 2 and 7 p.m. Oct. 13.

Family Day
McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert hosts its Family Fun Day with games and activities outside followed by a performance inside by Popovich Comedy Pet Theater. Starts at noon Oct. 13 with the performance at 3 p.m.

EATS
Chili Cookoff

The 47th annual International World's Championship Chili Cookoff can only mean one thing – good eating for the rest of us. The cookoff runs all day, Oct. 11-13 at the Spa Casino parking lot on Calle Encilia in Palm Springs.

CONCERTS
Palm Desert Free Concert

With the weather changing, evenings outside surrounded by good tunes can't get much better. The city hosts four free Thursday concerts during the month of October from 7-8:30 pm.

Sheryl Crow
She is Lance Armstrong's main squeeze, but you're going for her music at 8 p.m. Oct. 12 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio.

LGBTQ
Left Coast Lesbian Conference

A reception to open the conference will be held from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 10 at Lulu California Bistro, giving authors and readers a chance to meet. The conference features panels, workshops and social events at the host hotel, Casitas Laquita in Palm Springs.

Equality Awards
Host Leslie Jordan from "Sordid Lives", "Southern Baptist Sissies" and "Will and Grace" will keep this audience laughing with his one-of-a-kind whisky, southern drawl. Read our Q&A with Jordan and listen to his response to a question on his influence on the gay world.

Go Mod

Modernism Week's Fall Season Kick-off gives architectural fans a taste of what Modernism Week in February is all about with a sampling of tours running Oct. 11 through 14. "Suddenly 1954" retro cocktail party highlights the social aspect at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 at Design 849 in Palm Springs (what was the old Palm Springs Post Office building).
