Dominique Medina loves the joy people get from a single cupcake.

While most people her age were making plans to begin high school, Medina began her career at age 14 working in her dad’s business, Babe’s Bar-B-Que & Brewhouse in Rancho Mirage.

At 18, she entered Le Cordon Bleu to achieve her goal of being a pastry chef.

“I am so passionate about what I do,” Medina says. “It is like making edible art that is only around for a few hours.”

Medina is looking forward to her next creation, a baby boy. “I am extremely family-oriented,” she says. “My mom and dad are my best friends.”

Baking is the pastry chef’s way of helping the community, raising money for Relay for Life and working with the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center with her pastry creations. Self-admittedly shy, Medina says that baking also helps her to express herself without words and make a statement.

“Recently, my dessert was [featured on] The Huffington Post,” says Medina, who is also the pastry chef at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club. “It was a career highlight.”
