An expert in the skills of metallurgy, desert resident Rod Collins has turned an avocation into his vocation.
And a bustling one at that.
Back in April, Collins transformed a once-cluttered space at the College of the Desert Golf Center into a clean and active workshop/retail showroom.
While Collins' Putter Shop space sells everything from gloves to used clubs to sport-specific sundries, the owner has found a burgeoning niche market in his work with restoring old putters and, moreover, customizing putters into what club connoisseurs will aptly recognize as works of usable art.
His former hobby now graduated to a full-time gig, Collins has welcomed an influx of local business combined with a rush of international clientele.
