Most desert opera fans know about Opera in the Park — a day of languid alfresco enjoyment and arias in the afternoon. The annual celebration of music and song, presented by Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert, takes place each spring at Sunrise Park in Palm Springs.
What some local opera lovers may not know is that the guild is committed to introducing younger generations to opera and helping ensure the art form’s future by encouraging and supporting young singers. The guild offers financial assistance, performance opportunities, and student and adult outreach programs.
This month, the guild presents two important events: A vocal competition on Dec. 1 offers 10 young singers the opportunity to perform in front of an appreciative audience and vie for scholarships. A panel of professionals will judge each performance and award cash prizes.
On Dec. 10, the guild honors Wells Fargo Bank Vice President Gary Hall in recognition of the financial institution’s grant programs supporting the arts, which include the guild’s outreach mission. The gala dinner will be held at Agua Caliente Casino • Resort • Spa. www.palmspringsoperaguild.org
