Reborn Eichler

Midcentury modern gets a 21st-century reboot in this authentic South Palm Springs house.

Midcentury developer Joseph Eichler brought “modern to the masses” with his wide-ranging designs; 1960s-era sales brochures touted the homes’ “wonderful world of beauty” and “simple elegance.” Now, KUD Development debuts new Palm Springs Eichler homes — which come with certificates of authenticity — straight from the developer’s original plans.

Unveiled during Modernism Week in February, Desert Eichler No. 1 offers 2,177 square feet of living space in the main home, with four bedrooms, three baths, and a soaring, 424-square-foot signature Eichler glass atrium, all based on plans by architect Claude Oakland.

The home comes with a soaring, 424-square-foot signature Eichler glass atrium.

Custom Kerf cabinetry and solid walnut doors and paneling throughout set off its sleek post-and-beam architecture. Emtek and Aquabrass finishes complete the A-frame construction’s midmod look. The master bedroom offers 200 square feet that incorporate a dual-sink bath/dressing area and walk-in closet.

Modern upgrades include green-rated air conditioning and heat, porcelain tile, a foam-insulated roof, and dual-pane windows. Dacor stainless-steel appliances in the spacious kitchen adjoin a multipurpose room ideal for lounging.

Guests will enjoy the home’s 352-square-foot, Eichler-inspired casita, complete with its own bed and bath. The oversized, 18,295-square-foot lot provides sweeping mountain views and a fun, retro-inspired circle pool and separate spa that perfectly evoke Eichler’s “world of beauty” for the new century.

Construction on Desert Eichler No. 2 — another Claude Oakland model — and Desert Eichler No. 3, an Anshen + Allen flat-roof home, is underway.
