The noise level is about to increase at the Palm Springs Convention Center starting July 5.

More than 300 competitive dancers will compete in 40 groups at the MOVE 2013 National Finals, July 5-10, in Palm Springs. The event is free to the public.

The electric atmosphere is punctuated by heart-thumping music, the screams of energetic dancers and special custom-built stages with moving lights.

National champions will be crowned and cash prizes rewarded in Solos, Duets/Trios, Small Groups, Large Groups, and Top Lines for age groups Petite (8 and under),  Junior (ages 9 to 11), Teen (ages 12 to 14) and Senior (ages 15 to 19) divisions. Performers range in age from 4 to 19.

In addition, two dancers will be awarded a special scholarship  to honor the late J.C. Heywood, an avid supporter of the dancing and artistic communities.

Dancers have had to survive regional competitions held in 18 locations around the country to gain entry into the National Finals. MOVE is making its third appearance in Palm Springs and is scheduled to return until 2015, according to the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Beyond the competition, entrants will be treated to free workshops from some of the best competitive dancer teachers in the country. The competition draws more than 1,000 people, and contestants and their families fill the downtown Palm Springs hotels.
