The April 16 earthquake in Ecuador could be felt all the way to the Coachella Valley, and efforts to assist the victims has become a passionate outreach for Catalan Restaurant in Rancho Mirage.

Cynthia Davis, wife of Chef and Catalan Restaurant owner Drew Davis, was born and raised in Ecuador, and the Davis family set aside a night recently to raise funds for The Ecuador Earthquake Relief Fund Project by Global Giving.

Catalan conducted a fabulous silent auction and raffle coupled with a three-course set menu for $38 on May 5. A percentage of the dinner proceeds and 100 percent of the silent auction and raffle funds were donated to the relief efforts.

The funds will help survivors access emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine in addition to longer-term recovery assistance. All donations to this fund will exclusively support locally driven relief and recovery efforts from this disaster.

So while the story has lost its place among mainstream media, the need for assistance is still very real. The Davis family has heard first-person accounts from volunteers and family members, who relate the horror of the earthquake continues to be felt. The solidarity and heart of the Ecuadorian people is bringing people together in this moment of grief.
