April 25 marked the annual John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation Ophelia luncheon held at the Renaissance Esmeralda. Founded in 1998, this school-based mentoring program is dedicated to the education and empowerment of middle and high school girls in the Coachella Valley. The Ophelia program has been instrumental in guiding thousands of girls towards high school graduation and transition to college or career success. Over 400 girls are currently empowered by Ophelia.

This year’s luncheon sponsors included presenting sponsor Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians and valedictorian sponsor US Bank.

The “wings and dreams” themed event brought together girls and their mentors, Ophelia ambassadors and alumna, and supporters to celebrate their remarkable achievements. Over $83,000 worth of scholarships were awarded to 31 graduating Ophelia Girls. Two seniors also received life-changing full-ride scholarships to University of California Irvine and Fullerton.

“We are a small organization with a big heart and an even bigger mission,” said Peter Sturgeon, CEO of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation. “Our annual luncheon is not just an event; it’s a testament to the power of education and the potential of young women when they are given the right opportunities and support.”

Ophelia mentors are active in 17 of the 26 middle and high schools located throughout Greater Palm Springs. While the program has seen tremendous success transforming the lives of its participants and shaping the future of the Coachella Valley, work still remains to expand the program into all Valley schools. With community support, this proven program will make it possible for more local young women to receive guidance.
