Discovery Home Tour

A Note from CDMOD,

This year, the Cove Communities/Anita B. Richmond Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert is especially proud and excited to announce our fifth Discovery Home Tour on Feb. 19. Thanks to the generosity of six desert homeowners, we once again are able to share with you some truly unique and spectacular private residences in the valley. Each year these homes continue to delight and amaze us all with their particular brand of desert style. As the event always sells out and receives extraordinary reviews, all of us at the museum are especially grateful for the contribution these homeowners make to this important fundraiser for the Children’s Discovery Museum.

Volunteer Chairperson Kathleen Hopp offers a special invitation: “We welcome you to share in this delightful day and support the museum. Your support will enable us to offer many options to the children of the Coachella Valley through new exhibits, creative learning experiences, and educational support.”

We are particularly excited this year, as we’ve added an enticing new dimension to our home tour that’s sure to delight the softhearted, dog-friendly among us. Local designers and architects were invited to create entries for our first Canine Casitas auction. Innovative and engaging, these one-of-a-kind creations will be on display throughout the valley at various locations, as well as on the tour. They will be available for purchase through a silent auction.

This year marks one of significant growth and change for the Children’s Discovery Museum that will impact Coachella Valley communities for years to come. Since its opening at the current location in 1998, close to 500,000 children and families have enjoyed the fun, hands-on learning experiences that we offer. Each year our annual attendance grows due to the vision, dedication, and hard work of the museum staff and volunteers. As we continue to expand our programs to reach children of all ages and cultures of the Coachella Valley, we will start an expansion of the grounds and facilities.

This year also marks the unveiling for what is sure to become one of the desert’s major art features, the Eyes of Discovery mural along the north wall of CDMOD. Soon, you will see a whole new face (literally!) to the museum. As you approach from a distance, you will see the mural as a large close-up image of two eyes. When viewed more closely, you will notice that this larger image is made up of more than 4,000 individual, metal tile squares, each measuring 9 inches and painted in various levels of gray. Each of these tiles will be replaced with a portrait tile of museum supporters and visitors: young and old, men and women, famous and ordinary folk who make up our diversity in the desert. Portrait tiles with the image of your child, grandchild, grandparent, parent, or favorite relative are now available for purchase. A mural-tile scholarship program offers an opportunity to purchase a portrait tile for a deserving child in the Coachella Valley. This is a wonderful way to remember your favorite people, and most importantly, your contribution will provide an important source of revenue to help support the educational programs offered at CDMOD.

We look forward to seeing you on this year’s Discovery Home Tour.
