For the sixth consecutive March, the Big White Tent looms large in the heart of the Desert Resorts’ most celebrated shopping district.
Fashion Week El Paseo has garnered a loyal following among enthusiasts and promoters of style, as well as media outlets following and reporting on trends in haute couture and ready-to-wear apparel.
Excitement builds throughout the week and culminates in a showcase for the annual marquee designer: this year, Philippine-born, Los Angeles-based Oliver Tolentino. This young and bright star in the world of fashion joins Kevan Hall, Lloyd Klein, Eduardo Lucero, Juan Carlos Obando, and Colleen Quen on the list of Fashion Week El Paseo marquee designers.
In addition to established couturiers, talented students from Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising offer fresh perspectives in a runway show that gives them an opportunity to debut their collections before an appreciative audience. You never know what emerging talent might be tomorrow’s world-renowned designer.
While the popular elements of the Palm Springs Life-produced event — runway shows, cocktail receptions and after parties, and special attractions in El Paseo stores — remain the staples of Fashion Week El Paseo, new events are added every year. For 2011, they include a Project Runway show featuring local designer Michael Costello, Mondo Guerra, and Christopher Collins from the TV series’ most recent season; Trina Turk, who puts her signature touch on wearable Palm Springs’ modernism; and a retrospective on Western fashion.
Last year, Palm Springs Life joined forces with food and wine festival organizers to offer a complementary event that other fashion weeks lack. Food & Wine Festival Palm Desert takes over the Big White Tent on Saturday and Sunday to offer another experience that fetes “style.”
