The Producers was written and directed by the American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and composer, Mel Brooks. Known for his irreverent sense of humor, he once told a story that exemplifies his style. Brooks said of “The Producers” hitting its 50th Anniversary:
“The Producers has been the miracle of my life. The audience around me, some of them were hysterical, and some of them were just, frankly, shocked. I remember at one of the previews, a big guy […] saying, ‘How dare you? I fought for this country in World War II!’ And I said to him, ‘I was in World War II, also. I didn’t see you there.’ And that’s how I look at it. It’s my job to make terrible things entertaining. It still holds true; if you can make people laugh at Hitler, you’ve won the day.”
Brooks is one of those rare EGOT winners: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards accompany his resume as a standout American original. He won his three Tony awards in 2001 for his work on the musical, The Producers for Best Musical, Best Original Musical Score, and Best Book of a Musical.
Quotes: “The thing that makes The Producers work is that Brooks spares no one,” says Daniela Ryan, “Everyone is lampooned and poked fun of including Broadway audiences, producers, directors, even the ticket taker, not just Nazis and Hitler. This talented cast are not only wonderful singers and dancers but really funny.” • Daniela Ryan Director of The Producers
“What makes the Producers so special is that it is a comedy first, musical second.” Says Lance Phillips-Martinez, “The brilliance of the show is Mel Brooks’ comedy, which shines through his book and score. It really is the funniest musical ever!” • Lance Phillips Martinez Artistic Director
