Joshua Tree Retreat Center will Host Slamdance’s Filmmaker Retreat and Drive-In Cinema Program
Joshua Tree Retreat Center will host Slamdance’s filmmaker retreat and drive-in cinema program during the weekend of February 12-14, 2021, as part of the 2021 Slamdance Film Festival. Slamdance’s 2021 showcase will be a hybrid of physical and virtual programs taking place from February 12-25 and the Joshua Tree Retreat Center will help launch the festival with a public drive-in cinema program for local audiences and a private, socially-distanced filmmaker retreat by invitation only.
Held in Park City, UT since 1995, Slamdance is a qualifying festival for the Academy Awards and is known for the discovery of filmmakers Christopher Nolan, the Russo Brothers, Lynn Shelton, Lena Dunham, Ari Aster, Andrew Patterson and Merawi Gerima. Box Office Mojo reports alumni who first showed their work at Slamdance have earned over $19 billion at the box office to date.
“We feel fortunate that Slamdance has chosen to bring their 2021 hybrid festival to the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, which shares the festival’s passion for building community and supporting artists.” Terry Taylor-Castillo, JTRC Executive Director
“Slamdance ‘21 isn’t about compromise because of the pandemic. It’s about community, accessibility and growth. It’s about Slamdance’s future and the love of independent film.” Peter Baxter, Slamdance President and Co-founder
The online showcase includes short and feature film programs, filmmaker Q&A’s, jury and audience awards presentations, workshops and panels with notable alumni and “Unstoppable”, Slamdance’s first program for filmmakers with disabilities. The showcase will provide revenue sharing from sponsor proceeds for filmmakers and free online viewing opportunities for audiences.
The physical festival experience is an invite-only, socially-distanced weekend desert retreat for filmmakers to safely gather and connect with each other and industry guests. Here, Slamdance will present premier outdoor screenings, filmmaker workshops, and industry talks with notable alumni.

Slamdance Film Festival – By filmmakers, for filmmakers. Established in 1995 by a wild bunch of filmmakers who were tired of relying on gatekeepers to showcase their work Slamdance has proven, year after year, that when it comes to discovering talent and launching careers, independent and grassroots communities can do it themselves. Slamdance has proven to be the best place in the world to find lifetime collaborators. Slamdance alumni consistently nurture the next generations of artists to create sustainable careers in the arts. This artist-driven network that Slamdance has built over 26 years is our most valuable asset.
