Día de Los Muertos Ofrenda/Altar Workshops with Coachella Valley Days of Los Muertos

Coachella Valley Days of Los Muertos is hosting a four-part workshop about Día de Los Muertos to expand cultural awareness and understanding of the celebration. These weekly workshops will be on Zoom, Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on October 13, 20, and 27.

The workshops will discuss:

Week 2: Meaning of Personal Ofrenda/Altar
Week 3: Creating Your Ofrenda/Altar
Week 4: Reflection and Sharing

As part of the workshop series, we invite the community to create their own ofrenda/altar and to submit it to edudept@psmuseum.org by Monday, October 25. Selections will be shared on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.
Week 1: How Humans Celebrate Our Ancestors

Wednesday, October 6, 5:00 p.m.

Join the CV Days of Los Muertos team for the first session of a four-part workshop on Día de Los Muertos. Marnie Navarro from Raices Cultura and Michaeleen Gallagher from Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands will discuss why we humans celebrate our ancestors, how different cultures approach this practice, what Día de los Muertos is, and how you can build a relationship with this ancient practice. This is an introductory session to prepare you for the next three workshops that will help guide you through the process of celebrating loved ones in your own home. At the end of the series, you will be able to share with us your remembrance spaces. Join us!

Week 2: Meaning of Personal Ofrenda/Altar

Wednesday, October 13, 5:00 p.m.

An ofrenda/altar is a tradition to honor our loved ones and ancestors in a personal, memorable, and meaningful manner. Irene N. Rodríguez from Cabot’s Pueblo Museum and Marnie Navarro from Raices Cultura will discuss how we remember our loved ones through objects, photographs, personal items that are placed on the ofrenda/altar.

Week 4: Reflection and Sharing

Wednesday, October 27, 5:00 p.m.

Now it is your turn to share what Día de los Muertos means to you! Using what you learned from the three workshops, create an altar design. Designs can be sent as photos, drawings, renderings or videos. Please include a written or video recorded artist statement with your submission. Tizoc DeAztlan from Run with Los Muertos and Hilary Roberts from Palm Springs Art Museum will share selected designs and statements on Wednesday, October 27 at 5:00p.m. If we do not share your design, we hope you still create your altar to celebrate the holiday on November 1 and 2.

CV Days of Los Muertos is collaborative among the following organization: Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, Coachella Valley History Museum, Sunnylands Center & Garden, Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs Cemetery District, Run with Los Muertos, Raices Cultura, and Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert.
