IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells – La Quinta is set to return to our oasis December 6, 2020. This will be the third year for the popular sporting event. The 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells – La Quinta event had a positive economic impact on Greater Palm Springs, attracting 2,400 racers and approximately 5,000 other event attendees, the majority of which were from out of town. More highlights from from an economic impact report of the 2019 event provided by Tourism Economics, a division of Oxford Economics, include:
Non-local attendees spent an average of $1,135 while in the area, staying 3.75 days.
Local tax revenues amounted to over $340,000, coming primarily in bed taxes and sales tax revenues.
Non-local attendees spent an estimated $5,752,429 in the Greater Palm Springs region; with organizer and other direct spending, the direct business sales were $6,352,908.
The event contributed $9,918,422 in total business sales – also commonly referred to as economic impact – in the Greater Palm Springs economy, when factoring in indirect and induced impacts
IRONMAN has announced its “Safe Return to Racing” event guidelines, a series of comprehensive operating principles prepared in accordance with industry standards for open air mass participation sporting events. Based on standards from the World Health Organization (WHO) and developed with guidance from the IRONMAN Global Medical Advisory Board (IGMAB), the best practices are designed to allow for IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® triathlons to be organized in a manner consistent with each of IRONMAN’s local community objectives and within the expectations set by public health entities around the world as they relate to the impacts of COVID-19.
