Explore Palm Springs: ‘Camille’ Premieres at Plaza Theatre

Star Greta Garbo reportedly sneaks in balcony to watch film

And you thought Dec. 12 was all about Frank Sinatra.

Not entirely,

On Dec. 12, 1936, the Plaza Theatre opened its doors for the first time with the worldwide premier of now classic motion picture, Camille.

Many of Hollywood’s most influential personalities were present for the exciting event. Local attendees reported seeing a woman in dark glasses sneaking into the balcony after the lights had dimmed. They said that she looked an awful lot like the picture’s star, Greta Garbo.

A rumor that was circling around was that Louis B. Mayer insisted that she attend and she did, but it was reported she wore her pajamas under her fur coat and slipped in the front door and out the back. Co-star Robert Taylor and his soon to be wife, Barbara Stanwyck, attended the affair.

There is a multitude of ways to learn more about Palm Springs, which turned 75 in 2013. One of the more intriguing methods is by exploring the city’s history.
