Five hospitals in Riverside County, including two in the Coachella Valley, were among those earning a ranking among the best in their respective metropolitan area from a national ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage earned the No 1 ranking for the Riverside County-San Bernardino metro area, followed by Loma Linda University Medical, Kaiser Permanente in Fontana and Ontario, Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center, and Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Regional hospital rankings are determined by a hospital’s performance in the adult specialty rankings analysis and by its scores across each of the nine procedure and condition areas we evaluate.

Nationally, 21 hospitals were recognized in the Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which takes both the specialty rankings and the procedure and condition ratings into account. Hospitals received points if they were nationally ranked in one of the 16 specialties – the more specialties and the higher their rank, the more points they got – and also if they were rated "high performing" in the nine procedures and conditions. The top 20 point-scorers made up the honor roll.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn., earned the No. 1 ranking followed by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles were ranked No. 6, 7 and 8, respectively. Stanford Health Care - Stanford Hospital and Keck Hospital of USC also made the top 20.

For 2019-20, U.S. News recognized 569 U.S. hospitals – about 1 medical center in 10 – as Best Regional Hospitals, and these were numerically ranked by state and metro area. The greatest concentration of standout regional hospitals lies in the New York metro area, where New York-Presbyterian Hospital was first among 31 regionally ranked medical centers. In the Los Angeles metro area, UCLA Medical Center topped the list of 24 best regional hospitals. In Chicago, a third cluster of high-quality medical centers, Northwestern Memorial Hospital ranked first of 21.
