Hotel Hot Spots: A Local's Guide in Greater Palm Springs

Find out where to find that perfect getaway massage, drink, and meal

I have always loved spending time at hotels, maybe that’s why I ended up working in them for so many years!

Even on my days off, I found myself pulled toward the luxury resorts of Southern California to enjoy a cocktail, a massage, or even a dip in a glamorous pool.

After nearly a decade of traveling to the Coachella Valley for long weekends and mid-week escapes, I found a few favorite spots for the perfect hideaway. Now that I have made Palm Springs my home, these precious moments to check out of my everyday life and pretend to be on vacation are such a great way to continue experiencing the hotel life I adore.

Let me guide you to the best spots every local (and non local) can enjoy any day of the week.

Best Spa Experience

Miramonte Resort & Spa in Indian Wells became a favorite destination of mine a few years ago while living in LA and working for a sister hotel. Now that my discount has gone bye-bye, I still enjoy a day trip to The Well Spa for some much needed R&R.

While The Well offers a variety of spa treatments ranging from Vichy Showers to body wraps, I prefer to stick with a tried and true massage.  A fab massage is the quickest way to make me feel like I have been on a two- week vacation in the Bahamas without leaving the desert! Be sure to leave plenty of time to relax in the eucalyptus steam room and then my favorite – the outdoor grotto of pools.

Must Try: The Maestro (or Master) Massage that allows you to paint a picture of your needs to the therapist for a custom experience.

Best After Work Cocktails

There is honestly no shortage of places to quench your Happy Hour thirst. I enjoy a bit of history, a little architectural interest, and lots of people watching with my cocktails. That’s why I adore The Colony Palms.

Sitting at the bar at The Purple Palm (named for the Purple Gang, one of their members was the original owner of the hotel) is like stepping back in time. I always expect to see Frank Sinatra saunter in and take a seat! My drink of choice is typically a Dirty Martini, but there are dozens of unique libations to sip while taking in the pool view.

Must Try: The Purple Gang Martini is only fitting given the hotel’s ties to the legendary gang.

Best Spot for Dinner

Perhaps I’m just a sucker for a boat ride to dinner, but I love Mikado at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert. Arriving in the lobby, diners are quickly whisked away via boat to Mikado where chefs entertain those choosing to sit at the large community style tables.

Did I mention these chefs twirl knives and juggle while preparing your meal –  amazing!

For a more intimate meal, request a table and sample the fresh sushi options and delightful house cocktails. At the end of your meal that same boat will return you back to the lobby safe and sound!

Must Try: Any of the teppan style meals.
