Global Concern
Recalling the moment a doctor applied the blue “tattoos” that guide the path of radiation, breast cancer survivor Sue McCollum transformed that symbol of fear into one of hope. With the help of an artist friend, the Palo Alto resident created Blue Dot Ornaments: hand-blown glass globes sold to raise money for cancer research. Blue Dot Ornaments can be found in the Eisenhower Medical Center gift shop in Rancho Mirage and at Maison Felice and Denise Robergé Art Gallery in Palm Desert. Proceeds benefit Stanford University Cancer Center and the Lucy Curci Cancer Center at Eisenhower. McCollum ensures the money gets put to good use.
“I keep on top of these people,” she says, “I ask, ‘What research happened?’” Information: www.suemccollum.com.

On the Rocks
Calling it an “infinite vessel of my life’s touchstones,” Deanne Stillman ruminates on Joshua Tree National Park in the latest Desert Places series of books published by The University of Arizona Press. Like other books in the series, Joshua Tree: Desolation Tango offers a personal portrait of the land. Stillman, who lives in Los Angeles, also wrote Twentynine Palms: A True Story of Murder, Marines, and the Mojave, which has been added to
college courses on literary nonfiction. Photographer Galen Hunt
provided the images for Desolation Tango. The book is available at major bookstores and at www.uapress.arizona.edu.
