Intelligencer – Seeds of Inspiration

Behind the Mercedes-Benz dealership in south Palm Springs sits an enclave of galleries: the Backstreet Art District. Artists Marian Moiseyev, Kim Chasen, and Downs envisioned this concentration of venues offering works by artists from around the world.

“We needed a destination where people could see many forms of art,” Moiseyev says. “We want to be the
No. 1 source in the desert for contemporary art.”

The enclave includes Dezart One Gallery, Dezart Studio, Art, Trevor Goss/Silverman Gallery, Studio 13,
and Slaughterhouse Gallery.

First Wednesday Art Walk takes place each month from 6 to 9 p.m.

Backstreet organizers want to create an all-around cultural spot. Poetry readings are held on Thursdays (6 to
9 p.m. at Dezart Studio), and plans include dance and performance art.

“We look for quality, consistency, and professionalism,” Downs says, noting that the district has been popular with the area’s interior designers.
