RAY KAPPE, FAIA, was an internationally recognized architect, urban planner and educator whose career spanned from 1953 until his passing last November at the age of 92. His body of work is considered to be an extension of the early Southern California master architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Rudolph Schindler, Richard Neutra and Harwell Hamilton Harris. Kappe’s architecture has been characterized as “the apotheosis of the California House.” His designs demonstrate a mastery of warm, modern spaces, clearly expressed construction systems and environmental sensitivity.

In 1972, after serving for three years as professor and founding chairman of the Department of Architecture at California Polytechnic University of Pomona, Kappe resigned. With a group of faculty members and students, he founded the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), now considered one of the top architecture schools in the country. During his years in practice, Kappe explored modular systems, prefabrication and passive energy, completing more than 100 family homes as well as condominium and commercial buildings. Responding to a question about the 10 most important principles that helped make him a successful architect, planner and educator, Kappe said, “Always be willing to explore, experiment and invent... Maintain good moral and social values, and do not accept the status quo.”
