A sharply turned out crowd of all ages came to the Toscana Country Club Runway Tent to support the Humane Society of the Desert and watch as fashion went to the dogs with “Le Chien – A celebration of Dogs & Fashion.” Women in sky-high stilettos and men in silk shirts and shorts — many accompanied by their own furry best friends — warmed up with hors d’oeuvres from Mitch’s on El Paseo Restaurant, cocktails, and a silent auction before a runway show in three acts, all featuring adorable dogs, smiling models, and glamorous fashions.
The show opened with Bella da Ball (known in the Coachella Valley as “social ambassador and hostess with the mostest”) decked out in shimmering hot pink sequins, walking her poodle Holly, a vision in her own sculpted and dyed fur.
The Famous Dogs of Hollywood segment featured 12 Humane Society donors walking the runway accompanied by their stylish pooches, while images of Sinatra, Elvis, Marilyn, and other celebrities with their dogs filled the big screen behind them. Greyhounds, poodles, Scotties, and mixed breeds had a grand time, often stopping for a social sniff as they passed their brothers and sisters.
Supermodels and their Super Pooches followed, as professional models showed fashions from BB•one, BG’s Eclectic, and Tommy Bahama and their dogs wore styles from California canine designer Betty Turner. Very unique were outfits by designer Scott Harris made from stuffed animals, one of which was later sold during a live auction.
The finale came when master of ceremonies Patrick Evans introduced four up-for-adoption dogs and launched into a spirited live auction, all to benefit Humane Society of the Desert, Southern California’s largest no-kill animal shelter.
