New sculptures are appearing on El Paseo as part of the 2011/2012 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition.

Installation of the exhibition, which will place a total of 18 fanciful and thought-provoking sculptures along the world-famous shopping thoroughfare, is scheduled to be completed in early November.

Palm Desert’s Art in Public Places Commission selected the exhibitors from scores of artists who submitted their work for consideration. The artworks – including a wind-swept tree forged from steel plates, a 14-foot-tall aluminum angel, and a fiberglass infinity ring with no beginning and no end – will be displayed on pads in the El Paseo median for two years. Docent-led walking tours feature the Exhibition’s sculptures and the City’s public art collection. These tours are free and open to the public.

The public is also invited to a free ceremony celebrating the new exhibition on Thursday, January 6 at 6 p.m. at The Gardens on El Paseo, 73-545 El Paseo. Featured artists will be introduced on the lawn in front of Saks Fifth Avenue.

The popular El Paseo Invitational Exhibition and the City’s extensive public art collection are reasons why the City of Palm Desert has been named one of five art destination cities in America by Southwest Art Magazine.
