Treatments and technologies evolve, and people’s needs and desires fluctuate, but one thing that remains constant is Sofonio Plastic Surgery Center’s ability to keep pace. When demand for in-depth surgeries gave way to requests for smaller, faster procedures as people returned to work after the pandemic, Dr. Mark Sofonio and his trained staff nimbly stepped up to meet the changing landscape. It’s a practice that continues.

Now Dr. Sofonio is again seeing an uptick in requests for procedures that require more downtime. “We’re currently seeing a mixed caseload,” he says. “People realize that although some of the smaller procedures yield great results, they don’t take care of everything.”

The slight surge could be due to the increasing popularity of drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, which belong to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. Off-label use of these drugs has caused many people to lose weight — often quite dramatically — typically leading to soft-tissue sagging. Requests for tummy tucks and breast lifts have increased in addition to liposuction to banish stubborn fatty deposits. “I call it the GLP effect,” says Dr. Sofonio. “It’s not just bodywork, it’s also facial work because if you lose 100 pounds, your face is going to reflect it.”

Often, those seeking to correct weight-loss induced sagging are plastic-surgery naïve. If anyone walking through the door feels at all nervous, the Sofonio Plastic Surgery Center’s large and caring staff will put them at ease. “We pride ourselves on communication and personalized care,” Dr. Sofonio says. “Patients also appreciate having their procedures performed in our outpatient surgery center, which is much less intimidating and stressful than a hospital setting.” Dr. Sofonio utilizes an onsite 5,000-square-foot, fully accredited surgery center to perform many of his procedures. He also maintains privileges at Eisenhower Health and Desert Regional Medical Center for procedures that require in-hospital care.

Keeping up to date with the latest treatments and technologies is a given, although each one is carefully vetted. “I’d never adopt a technology that could potentially hurt someone just because it’s trending,” Dr. Sofonio says.

This year, the practice added NuEra, the nonsurgical, body contouring treatment designed to tighten and smooth loose and sagging skin. NuEra is a radiofrequency treatment that can address multiple body areas to uplift skin and achieve youthful, natural-looking results.

The level of attention people once lavished on their faces by way of plastic surgery has expanded to incorporate body work. “Patients want to tighten or remove tissue, perhaps rid themselves of remaining fat, but they definitely want the results to look natural,” Dr. Sofonio says. “That applies to the face as well. People’s requests have become very sophisticated. They want a natural looking face. They want to look younger, yes, but like themselves.”

Of course, the popularity of procedures that deliver a big impact in a short amount of time never wanes. An eyelid lift — or blepharoplasty — is such a procedure. Performed under local anesthesia, the surgery time is quick and patients can typically resume normal activities the next day. “Hooding on the eyes makes us look old and tired and an eyelift immediately changes that, making someone look more refreshed, young and awake,” Dr. Sofonio confirms.

Years of experience and attention to detail sets the practice apart. “What we want are great results and happy patients,” Dr. Sofonio says. “Our goal is excellence in every aspect of the experience — the before care, the procedure, and the aftercare — and it’s what we aim to achieve.”

Widely published and having lectured extensively, Dr. Sofonio is recognized as one of the top plastic surgeons in the country. Consistently named one of the top doctors in Castle Connolly, Best of the Desert, and Best of the Coachella Valley rankings each year, he and his team of professionals warmly welcome you.
