Break bread with man’s best friend

Pamela Bieri Restaurants

The opportunity to dine alfresco is one of the most enchanting aspects of desert living. This spring, instead of leaving your pet behind, visit these restaurants for an early-morning coffee, an afternoon burger and doggie treat:

Riviera Resort & Spa

While only service dogs have access to Circa 59 and other dining areas at Riviera Resort & Spa, all canines are welcome at the fabulous midcentury modern resort, according to Mike Islava, director of sales.

“We offer all guests with dogs a dog bed along with water bowls and treats, all of which they can keep,” Islava says. “But we do not allow them on dining patios.”

Circa 59’s outdoor patio overlooks the resort’s busy pool and lounge areas.

Café des Beaux Arts

Café des Beaux Arts has a large awning-covered patio that spans the corner of El Paseo and Larkspur Lane. Arrive for lunch, dinner, or just casual people-watching. Although the city of Palm Desert allows only  service dogs on the patio, Café des Beaux Arts puts pet companionship at the forefront of its service.

“We try to accommodate people with dogs that are not service dogs by allowing them a table on the perimeter of the patio,” says co-owner Christine Bloch.

“They can then have their dog next to their table, but on the outside of the patio rail. Most customers are very happy with this. We do give water bowls to all dogs.”

Grill on Main

Stroll the pedestrian friendly streets of Old Town La Quinta’s shopping area, and head to Grill on Main for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch. It has a charming, wrap-around Saltillo-paver patio with fireplaces. The patio is located under the wood-beamed eaves at both ends. Owner/partner Brett Maddock says Grill on Main allows “all dogs that are friendly on the patio.”

Dogs are offered water bowls but no treats.

Manhattan in the Desert

Considered one of Palm Springs’ favorite places for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a quick snack in between, Manhattan in the Desert has a dog friendly front patio overlooking East Palm Canyon Drive.

“We’re as friendly as we can be,” Owner Jamie Pinto says. “Of course, service dogs are welcome everywhere. We give bones as treats and water bowls. We haven’t brought in a cook for dogs as of yet.”

However, Pinto recently enlisted chef David Schy to create 20 fabulous new breakfast items.

“We’re huge animals lovers and have multiple animals at home, so we do what we can within the guidelines,” he said.

Le Vallauris

Seating at Le Vallauris restaurant is predominantly outdoors on a beautiful brick patio shaded by huge ficus trees. Enjoy lunch or dinner al fresco on white linen-clad tables set with fine china and gleaming silver.

General Manager Tony Bruggemans says, “Considering that we cannot ask a person proof of service dog, we allow leashed dogs on the patio only.”

Water bowls are served on request, but, sadly, no treats or duck confit for Fido or Rover are provided.

Eat lunch with Parisian flair at La Brasserie. The French bistro located in the Von’s shopping center at Washington and Highway 111, has a large private umbrella-shaded patio that — fortunately for patrons with pets — is accessible through a patio gate.

Chef/owner Emmanuel Janin says, “All well-behaved dogs are welcome to our patio. We do offer water bowls and treats if the owner approves.”

Hoodoo, the hotel’s outdoor restaurant and bar, is located on the front terrace of the property, directly on North Palm Canyon Drive. Come for a quick bite with your leashed dog or dine alone as your pet lounges in the designated dog area.

Dogs of all breeds are welcome to stay in the guest suites, and the staff truly enjoys having them.

Westin Mission Hills

Experience cibo matto or food madness at Pinzimini, the Italian-style restaurant at Westin Mission Hills. Pinzimini has a covered outdoor patio that overlooks a golf course and a picturesque rock waterfall.

Leashed dogs are welcome. Pets receive single-use water bowls, and the chefs create a separate canine menu, says manager Dan Randle.

“Chef is always developing food for his dogs at home,” says Randles. “In the summer, he made chicken and beef broth popsicles because the dogs like to crunch on ice.”
