Strolling for Fashion

Put on your walking heels (or hop on the El Paseo Courtesy Cart for a free ride) to peruse more than 300 designer stores along luxurious El Paseo in Palm Desert. From runway fashions and resort wear to accessories, fine art, and home goods, the palm-tree studded boulevard is where Apple, Burberry, Brooks Brothers, Coach, Gucci, Juicy Couture, Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, L’Occitane, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora, St. John, and many more make their ritzy homes. For a quick spree in a traditional mall, Westfield Palm Desert starts with a multilevel Macy’s and goes from there. Shop under the sun in downtown Palm Springs — or under the cooling misters, depending on the season. North of downtown, visit Wil Stiles and the Trina Turk and Mr. Turk boutiques for splashy retro-modern statement pieces to perk up your wardrobe. One of the great things about The River at Rancho Mirage — in addition to the 1.7 million gallons of water flowing through its pools, streams, and fountains — is finding specialty shops in a single setting. From fines wines and beauty supplies to beachwear, there’s something for everyone at this popular shopping destination. In Old Town La Quinta, wander through a European-style village of shops, restaurants, and galleries.

Midcentury & Vintage

As one of the best new niche attractions in the area, the Uptown Design District draws midcentury collectors from coast to coast. Dotted along both sides of North Palm Canyon Drive, peruse midcentury modern gems, such as Jill (in The Corridor), RoomService, a la MOD, Just Modern, Boulevard, Trend House, and Raymond | Lawrence. Déjà Vu Vintage Finery is a local favorite for distinctive party wear from eras lost but not forgotten. Accessorize with baubles, bakelite, and rhinestones from purveyors of mid-century costume jewelry, including Dazzles, flow modern design, and tchotchkes.

Bargains Beyond

The allure of al fresco outlet shopping is strong when both Desert Hills Premium Outlets, and Cabazon Outlets lie only 17 miles north of Palm Springs in Cabazon. Power through more than 140 shops to pick up current designer merchandise at slashed prices.
