The Amado Hotel Reflects Midcentury's Attention to Detail

Will be part of Modernism 2015 tour of Sunrise Park Neighborhood

Jaime Kowal tested 37 different colors on the hotel doors of The Amado in Palm Springs before choosing the now signature orange.

That’s the kind of attention to detail Kowal has brought to the 1955 midcentury modern building, which she converted into a hotel after it operated for nearly 60 years as an apartment complex.


Though the actual architect remains unknown, some guess it may take after famed Palm Springs architects William Cody or Albert Frey simply based on design and aesthetics.

“I wanted to honor the original lines, look and feel of the space, so I took great care to strip it down to its original bones and rebuild it in the most minimal way I could using the highest quality materials,” Jaime says over a latte at Ernest Coffee, another of her business ventures.



“For instance, I designed open-concept kitchens using thick imported teak shelves instead of upper cabinets that would close the space in,” she adds.

Other features to the hotel, which opened the day after Christmas last year, included:

    •    tongue and groove ceilings
    •    exposed beams
    •    poured concrete floors
    •    exposed brick

The result?

“To energize and stimulate the senses and creativity while simultaneously instilling a sense of peace and retreat,” Jaime says.

The Amado will be featured as part of the Sunrise Park Neighborhood Tour in February 2015 during Modernism Week where Kowal expects to welcome hundreds of people through the doors.

The Amado has been used by production companies for filming and photo shoots, for curated events and also attracts celebrity clients looking for a low-key getaway.

The hotel exudes a unique feel without traditional amenities, such as lockboxes allow guests to arrive whenever they want, without having to consider Front Desk hours.

Instead of a traditional hotel booking system, The Amado is part of AirBNB which provides unique branding and marketing for the property. It also showcases the hotel to thousands of travelers looking for a unique vacation experience in Palm Springs.
