Six hundred supporters of The LGBT Community Center of the Desert attended The Center Stage Gala at Palm Springs Convention Center on Oct. 30. Entertainers Frenchie Davis and Alec Mapa drew hefty applause from the enthusiastic crowd. Both performers repeatedly mentioned their delight that veteran actress Carol Channing was in the audience. Davis stopped her performance long enough to carry a bouquet of flowers over to the Channing table and presented them to the actress.
Randy Lowe, Board Chairman, and Gary Costa, Executve Director, spoke of the expansion of the Center this past year and introduced the honorees, Martin Massiello who received the Humanitarian of the Year Award and Willie Rhine and Albert Gonzales who were named Community Volunteers of the Year.
The LGBT Community Center offers support for issues including cyber-bullying, teen suicide, and hate crimes. In addition, mental health counseling, social support, health and wellness, and food bank programs are offered.
