VILLAGEFEST
Ask the Rabbi

If you have ever walked Palm Canyon Drive during this weekly Thursday night street fair, perhaps you've seen the small table and sign that prompts, Ask the Rabbi. "The Act of Killing"

Joshua Oppenheimer (pictured at left) will talk about his Oscar-nominated film for Best Documentary after it screens at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at Cinemas Palme D'or. The film focuses on the elderly members of the Indonesian death squads and the crimes they committed when they were younger.

Lunafast
This festival is about women, by women and features documentaries running Jan. 25 at Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. Read about one of them, ""Granny's Got Game" featuring a team of 70-plus-year-old women touring the country playing basketball.

HOLLYWOOD EAST
Michael Dante

A character actor whose face is bound to make you say, "I know that guy," Dante played roles in westerns among 30 films and also made his mark on TV, including a role in "Star Trek" that continues to make him a popular guest at Trekkie Conventions. His personal memoir is out, and we talked to him about it in preparation for a dinner-book singing event Jan. 23 at Melvyn's in Palm Springs.

Southwest Arts Festival

Not too many of the artists come with a moniker, but Elliott Newton is known as the "potter of La Quinta", and you can see his distinctive pottery wares at the Empire Polo Grounds, Jan. 24-26. Watch our VIDEO to see him at work.

Oaxaca Art
Woodcarver Armando Jiménez and weaver Porfirio Gutiérrez will show their wares influenced by the founder of Cabot's Puebo Museum, Cabot Yerxa, Jan. 24-26 at the Desert Hot Springs museum.

Second Annual Pelican Days Festival

This 2-day event, Jan. 25-26, allows you to see more than 400 species of birds that call the Salton Sea State Recreation area home. Scheduled events include bird walks, birders tour, kayaking tours, kids chalk art contest, Jr. Rangers program and more.

Styx
The 1970s band originally from Chicago continues to rock with a Jan. 25 date at Pechanga Casino in Temecula. Styx has its hard-core fans, but with more than 100 tour dates a year, they have also attracted a new audience as well.

Bird singing and dancing are an important part of the Native culture in California and Arizona. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum-sponsored festival includes performers, an on-site exhibition, native crafts and food vendors Jan. 25 at Palm Springs High School gymnasium.

Home Tour Benefits School
Tour the former artist colony of six homes in the historic Tennis Club area of Palm Springs Jan. 26. The homes were originally built between 1929 to 1937. Proceeds benefit Cielo Vista Charter School in Palm Springs.
