The Palm Springs City Council election held on Tuesday, April 9, 1940 took a back seat because of the distracting influence of the Desert Circus.
According to the Desert Sun, “there was a lack of competitive candidates in all wards with the exception of the first ward, which had three men battling it out for the office.”
Frustrated by the lack of interest, candidates took the fight to the attendees of the Desert Circus hoping to generate support.
Absentee ballots were not issued for this city election. A voter had to be registered to vote in the city of Palm Springs, and also must be in town on election day to cast his or her ballot.
There are a multitude of ways to Explore Palm Springs, which turned 75 in 2013.
One of the more intriguing methods is by studying the city’s history.
