Magic 8-Ball

Pool's Triumphant Comeback

Players of any proficiency can enjoy billiards.

Lara Rossignol

In the 1990s, billiards was the go-to game for ultra-hip Generation X. Since then, the world has fallen in love with cell phones, iPods, tablets, and other digital devices.

But pool is re-establishing itself as a great way to meet people in the Coachella Valley. It also promotes healthy competition among players. Palm Springs — and its surrounding areas — is a hotbed of diverse bars and lounges with pool tables. The game is easy to learn. So chalk up your stick and head to our favorite spots.

Plan B Live Entertainment and Cocktails is a lively neighborhood hang. Stop in for a drink, and challenge any of its regulars to a game of 8-ball.
32025 Monterey Ave., Thousand Palms. 760-343-2115.

Come for the fried pickles; stay for the pool at Cicchi’s Sports Shack Bar and Grill in Cathedral City. Locals love the friendly atmosphere and food. Find this classy sports bar centrally located among the desert communities.
68955 Ramon Rd., Cathedral City. 760-328-7876.

Unleash your inner cowboy at Pappy & Harrite's Pioneertown Palace. This Western-themed bar is home to some of the coolest concerts by today’s best indie and trendy bands. Shoot pool during a show, or play hooky and give yourself over to this devilishly fun desert stop.
53688 Pioneertown Rd., Pioneertown. 760-365-5956.

Over the Top Sports Bar, located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, brims with authenticity. Feast on guilty pleasures like pastrami hot dogs while you knock back a few brews and nail that corner-pocket shot.
301 N. Palm Canyon Dr., Suite 200, Palm Springs. 760-325-5100
