Every house has its own special history, but some are a bit more colorful than others. Take, for example, 2145 Camino Barranca, a Spanish-style home that’s currently for sale in the Mesa neighborhood of Palm Springs.

Jerry Weintraub, the late film and television producer whose credits include the movies Nashville, Diner, and Ocean’s Eleven (and its two sequels), lived there from 1976 to 1997. The home’s listing agent, Iris Cherry, a Realtor/Partner with Leaskou Partners, shared an anecdote from the book, Palm Springs Confidential: Playground of the Stars! that explains the unusual circumstances that led Weintraub to buy the house:

“Weintraub, an inveterate gambler, said he bought the house sight unseen in the middle of a poker game with (Frank) Sinatra, Dean Martin, and George Hamilton. Actually, it was Hamilton’s idea to buy the house. ‘How much?’ Weintraub asked without taking his eyes off his cards. ‘Thirty thousand dollars, said George. ‘Then buy it,’ he replied.”

The house, which is being sold fully furnished, was built in 1945 and has been expanded to include three bedrooms and three bathrooms spread over 2,564 square feet.

Cherry notes that in 2006, Dave Johnston, owner of D.W. Johnston Construction, Inc. in Palm Springs, remodeled the property. The house was rebuilt with a new roof, new electric, plumbing, and Saltillo tiles and the master bedroom and garage were added.

“He remodeled all the bathrooms in flagstone, added stonework to the fireplaces, and also on the exterior of the home,” adds Cherry. “He also reconfigured the kitchen, installed all new cabinets, appliances, and stone counters and inserted butcher block into the island.”

The backyard and pool are nestled right up against the mountains. The outdoor space also includes a built-in grill and a stacked stone fireplace.

Among the kitchen amenities are a large walk-in pantry, Sub-Zero refrigerator, a commercial Viking range with a grill, and a built-in Miele espresso machine.

A large stacked stone gas fireplace is the centerpiece of the living room and nearby there’s a separate family room. “One thing I love about this property is that there are French doors off most of the rooms that lead to patios,” says Cherry.

“The location and setting are magical set up against the mountains,” adds Cherry. “The house itself is really special — a very open and light floor plan while maintaining that old Spanish feel.  It does feel like a mini-estate as you enter through the wrought iron gate.”

The home’s new owners will also have entertainer Barry Manilow as one of their neighbors. Whether or not he’ll invite them over for a drink is a roll of the dice.

2145 Camino Barranca is listed at $1,199,995. Iris Cherry, Leaskou Partners, 760-425-0319, [email protected]
