"I moved down from San Francisco for family and business,” says Shaun Murphy, a partner with Slovak Baron Empey Murphy & Pinkney law firm. “I didn’t have to trade off the quality of professional work for quality of life.  I’m able to have that both here in this community and at this firm.”

SBEMP provides litigation and transactional services — “the full spectrum of the local economy, including business, commercial, and personal injury,” Murphy says. “There are different opportunities that are created based on the geographic area that you’re in, and there’s a diverse business community here. We have the experience and ability to meet the demand for legal services in the different sectors of our economy,” he explains. “We’re able to provide those services, which in turn helps the businesses grow, and that in turn helps us grow. A lot of the support that the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership and other agencies provide to business actually helps us.”

The firm, Murphy says, is “rooted in the community, because the founding members were either born or raised here. The legal community in the Coachella Valley is a collegial group unlike what you may experience in some larger metropolitan areas. We recognize that we can work together while still serving the best interests of our clients. Oftentimes, working cooperatively is in the best interest of the clients. That is a significant benefit. In the legal community, we work together. There are very few disputes that can’t be resolved by picking up the phone and talking to someone.”

In addition to a solid business atmosphere, “this is great area to live in, weather-wise,” he says. “There are tremendous opportunities to do so many things outdoors here that you can’t do other places. The affordability helps businesses attract quality people, and it provides an affordable place for them to live. The educational opportunities are tremendous and it’s certainly an area that they should consider, because it’s only going to continue to grow.”
