’90 Days of Summer in the Desert’

The sun glows with less intensity as it sets on the other side of the San Jacinto Mountains. With the water in the pool at 85 degrees, it’s perfect to splash away the workday and float into the evening. I love summer in the desert. With the business of “season” at bay for a few months, even we working folks can dip into the amenities that make Palm Springs the most relaxing place on Earth.

In June, our Desert Guide boldly challenged you to experience “90 Days of Summer.” Take advantage of rich cultural offerings, guilty pleasures, great deals locals enjoy at so many restaurants and resorts, and events that could only unfold in the Coachella Valley, we said.

So far, it has been all-consuming. Palm Springs International ShortFest and the Global Lens foreign film series at Annenberg Theater allowed us to slip off the sunglasses to watch films (including several shorts by local filmmakers) that we could see nowhere else. Blast From the Past: 60s and 70s Geometric Abstractions at Palm Springs Art Museum celebrated a cool period in postwar painting (the exhibition continues through Dec. 23). Palm Desert Concerts in the Park presented a range of styles in a series of live performances. Even the philanthropic community continued to buzz this summer — from An Evening at Cabot’s Pueblo Museum to the annual Pets on Parade benefiting the Humane Society of the Desert and Pegasus Riding Academy for the Handicapped.

This month, we showcase the desert’s most luxurious lounges (“The Vibe of First Class”), where resort properties serve up nightlife with distinguished flair.

For 180 more great things to do before summer winds to an end, turn to the “90 Days of Summer” feature in our Desert Guide.
