Instructor Joe Zarki will host a lecture on the biology and ecology of butterflies that live in Joshua Tree on Friday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. This entry-level course will teach students how to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth, the life stages of a butterfly, and how to identify the six major butterfly families.

The Friends of the Desert Mountains present the Carrizo Canyon Hike. This sandy wash with uneven terrain is  3 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of approximately 300 feet. Make sure to wear close-toed shoes and to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
